The panel is organised by People and Mining, an online networking space led by a diverse group of researchers and practitioners stretching across the departments at University of Exeter and the development organisation Pact.

Panel: Creatives and community perceptions of mining

From Classical times artists and creatives have been depicting mining as well as working with its resources. Whilst not uniform, these images have a powerful potential to contribute to shaping attitudes and can reflect shifts in public perceptions. How the general population perceive mining communities and extractive projects therefore plays a critical role in understanding and pursing social justice. This panel will consider some of this rich history but also explore a range of important contemporary cases, including jewellery, GIS and painting.
